WHY AI READINESS

AI access is expanding faster than students’ ability to judge it.

The educational task is not simply to help students get answers faster. It is to strengthen human judgement while they learn to use AI intelligently.

THE SCHOOL CHALLENGE

Two risks. One educational responsibility.

Schools need a way to engage with AI while protecting the thinking that learning is meant to develop.

IGNORING AI

Students encounter it without shared guidance.

Avoidance leaves important questions unanswered: when is AI useful, what should be checked and when should it not be used?

ADOPTING WITHOUT A LEARNING ARCHITECTURE

Access arrives before readiness.

Tools can enter the classroom without a progression that develops reasoning, verification and responsibility.

ACCESS IS NOT CAPABILITY

Being able to use a tool is only the beginning.

A learner may know how to ask for an answer without knowing how to assess it. Readiness includes framing a question, checking evidence and recognising when help is inappropriate.

Capability ≠ authority.

Knowing how to use AI does not grant permission to use it for every task. Purpose, school boundaries and human responsibility still apply.

OUTPUT IS NOT THINKING

A better answer does not always mean deeper understanding.

A fluent explanation can conceal an unchecked assumption. A correct result may reveal little about whether the student can explain, test or reproduce the reasoning.

Correct output is not complete evidence of thinking.

Ask the learner what they tried, what they checked and why they accepted—or changed—the answer.

A confident answer is not the same as a supported answer.

WHY PROHIBITION ALONE IS INADEQUATE

Boundaries need an educational purpose.

Some tasks should be completed without AI. Those moments protect independent thinking and give teachers a clearer view of understanding.

But prohibition alone does not teach students how to judge AI when they encounter it elsewhere. They also need opportunities to learn its limits and practise responsible choices.

WHY UNRESTRICTED ACCESS IS INADEQUATE

Freedom to use AI should grow with readiness.

Unrestricted access can make it easy to skip the first attempt, accept an explanation or hand over a decision before understanding the problem.

Purposeful access keeps the learner involved: think first, use appropriate assistance, check the result and explain the final choice. Age, task and demonstrated readiness shape the boundaries.

TEACHERS REMAIN CENTRAL

Someone must know the learner—not just the answer.

Teachers recognise hesitation, misconceptions and progress in context. They can decide when to offer support, introduce a counterexample or let a student work through a difficulty.

AI can assist an activity. It does not replace the teacher’s responsibility to guide learning, interpret evidence and exercise educational judgement.

READINESS DEVELOPS PROGRESSIVELY

The questions become more demanding as learners grow.

Start with noticing, testing and explaining. Build towards evaluating claims, designing solutions and judging systems. Age sets a developmental context; evidence of readiness shapes the support and access within it.

  • First, make thinking visible.

    Can the learner explain a rule, test it and revise it?

  • Then, judge the evidence.

    Does a claim have support, and what are its limits? Pattern ≠ cause.

  • Later, judge the whole system.

    A strong score is not enough to justify use. Technical performance ≠ system suitability.
